| Neighbors Connect with CNN Neighborhood Grant! |
Madison South neighbors enjoying one of five community events organized by neighborhood leaders this summer. Madison South Neighborhood was one of 5 recipients of CNN grants this year. The block parties and Base to Butte celebrations brought 500 neighbors out to rediscover and create community in a underrepresented area that has a lot to be proud of. Dawn Ramussen one of the organizers expressed "From this grant it is very clear that Madison South neighbors are hungry for community engagement and welcome an inclusive atmosphere and see all neighbors as part of the community fabric".
CNN is inviting Neighborhood Associations and Community Organizations in the CNN area to submit a project proposal for the 2009 Neighborhood Grants program. The goal is to provide neighborhood and community organizations an opportunity to build community, attract new and diverse members and sustain those already involved. Grant amounts may range from $500 to $5,000. Organizations interested in submitting proposals to CNN are strongly encouraged to attend the grant workshop held on September 25th. Proposals are due no later than 2:00 PM on November 3rd. For more information and how to apply click here or contact CNN Neighborhood Grants Program Sandra Lefrancois 503-823-2780. |

| Keep Colwood Golf Course Green! |
Neighborhood leaders and CNN are preparing for the City Council hearing on September 17th at 6p. The Keep Colwood Green Coalition, which includes neighbors and advocates from Cully and Concordia, is working on a two key things: 1) opposing the rezoning of Colwood Golf Course from open space to industrial; and 2) supporting acquisition of the property for a new regional park. Colwood is one of the last parts of the environmentally sensitive and diverse Columbia Slough area that has not been lost to development. Also the area surrounding Colwood is extremely deficient in parkland, natural areas, and other open space. The Cully neighborhood access rate is 2,780 people per park acre, compared with a citywide average of 40 people per park acre. Loss of this last significant open space in the neighborhood would mean that this deficiency could never be adequately addressed. |

Invited speakers include Commissioner Randy Leonard, Lila Lee-Council for Prostitution Alternatives, Commander Mike Crebs, Bill Smith-Defenders USA Ken Turner-82nd Avenue of Roses, Jeri Williams and facilitated by Judith Mowry-both from the Office of Neighborhood Involvement. |
| Rose City Park History Book Benefits Neighborhood Efforts |
What do Joe's (formerly G.I. Joe's), Oregon Governor T. T. Geer, Walker Cup golfer Dick Yost, and Machu Picchu have in common? All have a connection or two to Rose City Park, the Northeast Portland neighborhood founded in 1907, the same year as the Rose Festival. These tidbits of historical trivia and many, many more about the family-friendly 'streetcar suburb' are described in the recently published 100th anniversary edition of the Rose City Park Neighborhood Association's history book. The 208-page book will be a great addition to Portland history buffs. Proceeds benefit the Rose City Park Neighborhood Association. Copies will also be made available for borrowing from the Multnomah County Library. For more information, or to place a book order, contact Jay Griffith by phone at (503) 236-2314 or by email at jay@griffithpdx.com. |

| ParkFest: Come Play and Have Your Say! |
How do we plan parks? How do we determine what the needs for parks are in your neighborhood? What is Portland's next "great park?" This fall Portland Parks & Recreation is hosting a new event to ask the public these questions and more. ParkFest: Come Play and Have Your Say, a fun and innovative new approach to engaging the public in PP&R's future planning, will debut from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 25 at University Park Community Center, located at 9009 N Foss Avenue in north Portland. The event will also feature an array of fun recreational opportunities from climbing walls and tae kwon do to indoor skateboarding and craft classes. There will also be door prizes, entertainment, and complimentary food and refreshments.
"We want to find a fresh, new way to have a dialogue and discussion with the public about the future of their park system," says Public Involvement Manager Elizabeth Kennedy-Wong. "Do they want active recreational opportunities, like playgrounds and basketball courts, or do they want more natural areas, trails and walking paths? We want the public to tell us how we determine what goes where, especially when we're looking at limited funding resources."
The event and all recreational opportunities are free of charge, but registration is required. Participants can pre-register for the event beginning September 15 online at portlandparks.org or by calling 503.823.PLAY. Childcare and translation services are available when you register.

The Trust for Public Land invites you to show your support for urban parks by joining in PARK(ing) Day 2008 on September 19. PARK(ing) Day is a one-day global event during which artists, activists, and citizens collaborate to temporarily transform parking spots into "PARK(ing)" spaces: temporary public parks. Choose your parking spot, feed the meter, add a few more square feet of green space to our "green friendly" city, and invite passers-by to enjoy nature instead of asphalt for a few hours. Please contact Daryn White, Daryn.White@kimptonhotels.com, to confirm that you want to create a park and join the party, and we'll include your park spot on the Portland Park(ing) Day map. |
