CNN Community Engagement Activities
Somali Neighbors in Cully Connecting at National Night Out
Lul Abdulle of the Somali Women's Association has been working on Somali family outreach for Central NE Neighbors as part of our Community Engagement activities. Since June Lul has talked to about 40 families living in the CNN area. Many Somalis expressed the desire to connect to their community and are happy to have an opportunity to voice their concerns and to be more informed. Through these conversations the connection to schools, neighborhood safety, youth involvement, and culturally specific communications are key community issues. The goal of this effort is to build on the identified needs by providing opportunities for networking with community groups, neighborhood leaders and service providers in the area. As well the idea is to build cultural awareness of Somali families in their neighborhood. Lul expressed:

"The majority of the community emphasized to get a free space to meet in order to educate themselves about the City of Portland and the way the system in this country works. For them it was a great news the offer CNN made about using its building during the weekend for community support group and leadership education. Plus CNN offered to bring speakers from the City of Portland especially ONI to talk about their programs and other community projects taking place within the City."
Two New CNN Neighborhood Web Sites are Launched
The Cully and Madison South
Neighborhood Associations launched their new web sites!

CLF's Regional Equity Atlas is Out!
Four years in the making, the first-ever compilation of maps and data showing equity conditions in the Portland-Vancouver region is now available. The Regional Equity Atlas: Metropolitan Portland's Geography of Opportunity examines the geographic distribution of people and assets in the region, along with the relationship between the two. With over 50 dynamic maps the Atlas probes the question of equity as it relates to how we plan our communities and explores whether or not our most vulnerable residents are being left behind. The first set of maps focus on the distribution of populations who have historically been left out-poor people and people of color. The second set of maps-the opportunity maps-show the regional distribution of resources to which everyone should have  access-resources like affordable housing, quality public schools, transit, public parks, greenspaces, grocery stores and walkable neighborhoods. A unique reference table combines the two map sets to provide the basis for understanding the relationship between where vulnerable populations live and whether or not they have adequate access to these regional assets.

Go to www.clfuture.org to learn more about the Regional Equity Atlas Project. A copy is available at CNN for your review.
Over 2000 Turn out for Community Care Day

During the volunteer celebration at Roseway Heights School representatives of Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation presented a check for $100,000 to the District to support Community Care Day and purchase a new play structure for Roseway Heights School!
