| Somali & Latino Neighbors' Cultural Awareness Workshop |
Somali Women's Association
The Somali community is the fastest growing refugee population in Portland while Latinos are the largest immigrant population. Learn about Portland's Somali & Latino Community. This cultural awareness workshop is lead by Lul Abdulle of the Somali Women's Association (SWA) and Marco Mejia of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC). These community leaders will each lead a presentation on aspects of Somali & Latino culture. There will be time for question & answers.
When:Wednesday, November 28th from 7-9pm

| 82nd Ave. of Roses Traffic Safety Open Houses |
|
The 82nd Avenue of Roses has the highest rate of traffic crashes for an arterial street in Portland. Please join the Office of Transportation (PDOT) and Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) for three 82nd Avenue of Roses Open Houses to review the solutions to improve transportation safety along 82nd. PDOT has development of a Transportation Safety Action Plan for the 82nd Avenue of Roses. The proposed improvements will allow the corridor to continue to serve vehicles, transit and pedestrians while utilizing traffic safety tools to reduce injuries and fatalities for all modes of transportation.

| Get Involved in Portland's Streetcar Future! |
Join the Office of Transportation at three Open Houses to kick off the planning process for the Streetcar System Plan and see Transportation's new Primary Transit Network map (PTN). The PTN study identifies current transit corridors (bus, light rail, streetcar) as well as corridors that may require future transit and land use infrastructure investments. This study is one of the initial planning tools for the Streetcar System Plan. | Diversity and Civic Leadership Academy |
In 2007 and 2008, the Center for Intercultural Organizing partnered with Oregon Action and Latino Network to develop a yearlong Diversity and Civic Leadership Academy for immigrants, refugees and people of color. After diligent selection process, fifteen immigrant and refugee leaders gathered for their first convening in July. The training was held on a beautiful Sauvie Island Retreat Center and was opened by Jeri Williams from Office of Neighborhood Involvement and Colin McCormack from the Diversity and Civic Leadership Committee who led the vision and foundation of the academy. The project aims to develop leadership within and between diverse immigrant and refugee communities through training and support, promoting political education skills and capacities, developing a shared analysis, and conducting research on the trends and needs of immigrant/refugee groups. |

Portland Parks & Recreation will host a series of open houses. Come and learn about Park System Development Charges (SDCs) and how they are used as a tool to cover some of the costs for the additional parks and recreation facilities needed as a result of population growth and new development. | Courtyard Housing Design Competition Winners Announced |
Portland Courtyard Housing Design Competition will announce winners. Join the event on November 14th 7pm, 1900 SW Fourth Ave. There were over 250 submittals from around the country and the world. Participants were invited to submit innovative designs demonstrating how higher-density courtyard housing can serve as an attractive option for families with children, while also contributing to environmental sustainability, providing an affordable housing option, and responding to neighborhood context. Following this event, the public will be invited to choose their favorite designs as part of "People's Choice" balloting in November and December www.courtyardhousing.org. |

Creating Places for Families and Sustainability in the City |
How can Portland continue to provide new housing options for families as the city continues to grow and densify, and how can this be done in ways that are environmentally sustainable? Join City Housing Lectures on child-friendly housing and sustainable community design, by Clare Cooper Marcus and Cynthia Girling. Clare Cooper Marcus is co-author of Housing as if People Mattered and People Places. Cynthia Girling is co-author of Skinny Streets and Green Neighborhoods. | Become a Mediator with RNW |
RNW is now accepting applications for a limited number of spots available for our annual mediation training in January, 2008. The application deadline is Monday, November 26th, 5pm. Click here to download the application. This 35-hour basic mediation training is offered free in exchange for a one-year weekly volunteer commitment with Resolutions Northwest. The basic mediation training is a 35-hour training and covers all dimensions of mediation work. It's designed for people who are committed to solving conflict throughout their workplaces, organizations, and community. The training program is designed with energizing activities to learn and practice conflict resolution tools, including conflict theory, mediation stages, empathic listening, facilitating negotiations, cross-cultural conflict management and more! |

Discussion on Manufactured Home Park Closures |
On Wednesday, November 14th the School of Urban Studies and Planning at Portland State University is sponsoring a presentation on "Manufactured Home Park Closures: Gentrification in the Urban Fringe and Beyond." Andree Tremoulet, an Urban Studies PhD Candidate who has done extensive research on manufactured home park closures, will be the speaker. | Comment on Metro's Regional Transportation Plan by Nov 15 |
Metro is updating the Regional Transportation Plan (RTP), the long range plan to guide future transportation investments in the Portland metropolitan region. This plan helps determine the livability of our communities because it is the blueprint for what transportation projects are funded. Metro will accept public comment for the draft RTP untill November 15th. The draft is available at http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=g7xjrecab.0.0.jwesk9bab.0&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.metro-region.org%2F&id=preview&id=preview. Comments may be submitted via mail, fax, email or through testimony provided at public hearings. There is an open house at 1p and public hearing at Metro at 2p on November 15 in the Council Chambers. Public input is crucial to ensure that the updated plan reflects what people need, protects what they value, and invests in what is needed to make our region a great place to live, work and play. |
