Please join the Office of Transportation (PDOT) and Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) for three 82nd Avenue of Roses Open Houses to review the solutions to improve transportation safety along 82nd. The proposed improvements will allow the corridor to continue to serve vehicles, transit and pedestrians while utilizing traffic safety tools to reduce injuries and fatalities for all modes of transportation.

WHEN: Wednesday December 12, 6:30-8:30pm,

Dec 12th Public Hearing on Park System Development Charges
Come Make Your Voice Heard and Support new funding for Parks, Trails, and Natural Areas!
WHEN: 2:00 PM, December 12
WHERE: Portland City Hall
The Portland City Council will hold a public hearing on a proposed increase in park system development charges (SDCs). Park SDCs are one time fees on new development that pay for new parks, trails and natural areas to service new growth.

As population grows, Portland is losing ground in developing and acquiring parks. Less than 50% of Portlanders live within 1/4 mile walking distance of a public greenspace. Less than 1/3 of Portland's population lives within 1/4 mile of a natural area. Council is to consider a proposal to require new development to pay 75% of costs to service new growth. Portland's current cost recovery rate for park SDCs is only 22%. The proposal will also assess non-residential fees to service parks in commercial and business districts.
Community Invited to Vote on Courtyard Housing Designs

The Portland Planning Bureau is inviting community members to view all 253 designs and to vote for their favorites.  The public can vote online through December 28 or vote at an open house event to be held December 14 and 15, which will be the only opportunity to see all the designs on public display.  An additional event will be held at the Midland Library focusing on designs intended for east Portland (east of 82nd Avenue). Winners of the "People's Choice" balloting will be available in late January 2008.

SMART Reading and Book Program at Scott School
The SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) reading and book program is going strong at Scott School 6700 NE Prescott. Dozens of volunteers from the community are spending an hour a week sharing a love of books with children from our Central Northeast neighborhoods. All of the children being served by the program receive at least one book a month for their home library. Our volunteers read one on one with students. They simply share a love of books and reading creating motivated readers who will have a life long love of books. We still need 14 more people to read one hour a week. This is a great opportunity to get to volunteer right in the neighborhood. SMART volunteers find the experience deeply rewarding. Volunteer application online at www.getsmartoregon.orgor pick one up at Scott School. Contact Dan Berkman, 503-525-1135 or dberkman@getsmartoregon.org.
