2009 CNN Neighborhood Grants Update
Thank you to everyone who submitted a grant proposal! CNN received 22 applications for community building projects in the area totaling $83, 500 in requests with a $20, 000 allocation from the Office of Neighborhood Involvement. This marks the ever growing response in this third year of the CNN grant program. The CNN Grant Selection Committee is well prepared for the difficult task ahead and will meet in late November. CNN will announce the committee's recommendation for funding in December. We look forward to announce the awards in the January newsletter edition.
CNN Recycling Event a Success!
The Central NE Neighbors e-waste recycling fundraiser was successful beyond our expectations. The event was to raise money for a new copier which we did! Thanks to our committee volunteers it was also a great way to demonstrate how the community can recycle, and prevent over 17 tons of e-waste from ending up in a landfill. Here's what was collected: 151 monitors/210 TVs-154 computers-7,679 lbs of general e-waste, including stereos, electronics-2,748 lbs of scrap steel and printers-650 lbs of lead car batteries-605.5 lbs of insulated wire-353.5 lbs of household batteries-151 lbs of ABS plastic-141 lbs of fluorescent light bulbs. CNN is interested in hosting this event again.

Cully-Concordia Community Assessment To Go Before Council
The Cully-Concordia neighborhood has long been deprived of basic services like sidewalks, parks and community centers. Through the Schools, Families, Housing program, the area was targeted for improvement. City Planning staff along with engaged community partners will present the Cully-Concordia Community Assessment and Action Plan Assessment and Action Plan to City Council for their adoption on November 20 at 2 p.m. The project's intent has been to improve the lives of children and their families while benefiting the whole Cully-Concordia community. Three public schools (Faubion, Rigler and Scott) and one school site near 42nd Ave./Killingsworth St were considered. Key questions addressed were:
· How can schools become the center of community life?
· What are the priority programs, services and infrastructure that are needed to support children and families?
· What are the partnerships and strategies that can address these priorities?
