| Welcome CNN Summer Interns! |
|
Abdul Abdullhai (left) I am going to attend Franklin high school this fall. In my spare time i like to play basketball and hang out with friends. I enjoy working with people. I want to go to Portland State because I want to major in business and I hear they have a good business class. One day I will have my own business and travel the world.
Andrew Slaughter (right) I attend Grant High School and I am 16 years old and I will be a junior this coming Fall. I love working with people and I am trying to gain better communication skills. In my spare time I like to hang out with my friends and family, play football and write. In my community I try to be someone that kids can look up to. One day I plan on being a famous screen writer or movie director.
Andrew and Abdul participate in IRCO's (Immigrant & Refugee Community Organization) internship program. They are assisting with a variety of office functions as well as support community events throughout July and August. Hope you have an opportunity to meet the new interns! |

| Cully-Concordia Schools, Families, Housing Assessment |
 The Cully-Concordia Assessment is a City of Portland Schools, Families, Housing Initiative focusing on improving the lives of children, youth and their families in portions of the Cully and Concordia neighborhoods. Key questions being addressed are: how can schools become the center of community life? What are the priority programs/services/infrastructure that is needed to support children, youth and families? What are the partnerships and strategies that can address these priorities? The project began in the fall of 2007 and will continue until the end of the summer. Extensive data collection including the interviewing of over 75 people from parents with children, to school principals, to service providers has occurred. A draft assessment report includes interview results can be viewed here. The next meeting is August 6. The project involves diverse organizations in the area including NAYA, Hacienda CDC, Cully neighborhood, 42nd Business Association, Rigler SUN, CNN and many more. | Seeking Members for Portland's Public Involvement Council |
 Are you interested in increasing the community's ability to impact government decisions? Would you like to work on a team to develop policies that will assist the City of Portland with involving the public in ways that are inclusive, transparent and accountable? If so, consider applying for the Public Involvement Advisory Council. This new advisory council will develop guidelines and policies for public involvement processes for the City of Portland. | Get Ready to Host a Block Party-National Night OutAugust 5th! |
 Every year, there are close to a hundred block parties in Central NE neighborhoods alone! These parties vary in size and activities such as BBQ, live music, face painting, raffle, parade, pot-luck, ice-cream social, so you can count on having fun! Neighbors renew old friendships and make new ones creating community and breaking down barriers. National Night Out (NNO) is Tuesday, August 5th!
If you are hosting a National Night Out party, you can register online starting June 10, 2008. Registration closes July 22. Parties happening between July 29 and August 2 can be registered as official National Night Out events. By registering your party, you will receive:
- Support with your planning efforts
- Information and National Night Out promotional materials
- Help with street closures and noise ordinance variances
- Assistance with requests for visits from police and fire

| NE Portland Tool Library |
 The Northeast Portland Tool Library is a lending library of tools. Yes, a library. If you live in NE Portland and need a tool, a form of ID is all that is required to check one out. Then, when you are finished, simply return the tool. How cool is that? Do you remember that "special tool" you purchased to fix the faucet that will never be used again? Donate it and give another person the ability to fix their faucet. How about that special wrench for the timing belt in your car? Don't have the car any more, but still have the wrench? Donate the wrench. The new owner of your car may need to check it out. When we share, everybody wins! | Want to Help Build a Community Resource Library in Cully? |
 The Cully neighborhood which has a large Latino population, does not have a library. The idea of the community resource library is to provide books, political documentaries, and resources to the community free of charge and accessible to all. The community library will be housed inside of a tienda on Cully Boulevard, a space where neighborhood residents already go on a regular basis, and will continue to go, for staples such as milk and tortillas. By bringing these resources to the community we hope to build literacy, consciousness of political issues, as well as the knowledge that by working together we can make projects happen in the community.
We are currently looking for donations of books and money to build this resource base. We would like to have a mix of books for kids and adults (we are especially looking for bilingual books, books in English and books in Spanish). We are working with Central Northeast Neighbors to gather resources. If you want to drop off books or mail a check, they can be sent to Central Northeast Neighbors-Cully Library, 4415 NE 87th, 97220.  Surveys designed by each of the Portland Streetcar District Working Groups are being used to assess community opinion about potential streetcar corridors. Links to all five of the surveys are being made available on the PDOT Streetcar System Plan website

| Connecting Green Alliance |
 Connecting Green is an initiative to create the world's greatest systems of parks, trails, and natural areas. The Audubon Society of Portland, Metro, Trust for Public Land and the Urban Greenspaces Institute created the Connecting Green Alliance; A group of non-profits, state and local agencies, businesses and citizens from across the region. The Alliance is working to plan, develop and promote the Connecting Green initiative. How to be an Agent of Change in a Circle of Influence |
 This class covers the theory, practice, and tools of an agent of change working within a chosen circle of influence (a neighborhood, workplace, interest club, extended family, etc). Each participant will select one circle of influence, develop a strategy and plan for change, and take steps of early implementation, in consultation with other members in the class. Presenters Jeanne and/or Dick Roy are co-founders of the Center for Earth Leadership, the Northwest Earth Institute, and the Oregon Natural Step Network. 1. Theories and strategies for citizen-led cultural change.
2. Role, mindset, and general approach of the agent of change.
3. Selecting a specific circle of influence for work as a change agent.

5. A vision for Point B - clarifying either a limited or expanded vision for more sustainable practices within the circle.
6. Developing a plan for work as a change agent in the selected circle of influence with a focus on early implementation steps. |
