| Neighbors Win to Stop Big Box Proposal! |
The Save Madison South/Save Roseway Coalition was created to fight the proposed development of a 'Big Box' retail store by Madison High School on NE 82nd Ave. It was announced on February 6th that SmartCentres, a developer known for Wal-Mart SuperCenters, has withdrawn its option to purchase the 26-acre parcel of land. The developer's decision follows a one-and-a-half-year fight led by the coalition, and energized by the involvement of more than 2,300 concerned neighbors contributing over 4,000 volunteer hours. The key to the group's success is that we all looked at NE 82nd as a holistic area including neighborhoods, businesses and schools. That fueled people's enthusiasm for building a new community, and sparked interest up and down the corridor.
The Save Madison South/Save Roseway Coalition will continue to work toward a commercial development that represents the unique character of the surrounding neighborhoods and visionpdx. For more information about SMS click here. |

| City Council Holds Two Community Budget Forums in February |
The City Council holds budget outreach forums to give the community an opportunity for early involvement in the budget process. Community members learn about and share their feedback regarding budget requests submitted by city bureaus to the City Council. These forums are also a great occasion to provide direct input to the City Council about community needs and priorities. The whole City Council attends these forums, along with several bureau directors. All notes from the forum will be compiled, sent to all Council members, and posted online. For more information and to sign-up for Spanish language and/or childcare go to community budget. For information about the Office of Neighborhood Involvement budget click here.
