| Should schools be repaired, renovated or replaced? |
|
Community members are encouraged to attend one of four January meetings to give input on options for repairing, remodeling and/or rebuilding Portland Public School buildings. Sessions will be held Jan. 15 at Jefferson High School (north clusters), Jan. 16 at Wilson High School (west clusters), Jan. 22 at Madison High School (northeast clusters) and Jan. 23 at Franklin High School (southeast clusters). The meetings will be held from 7-9:30 p.m. Consultants will present findings from their analysis of the physical conditions and educational suitability of each school in that quadrant. They also will summarize public input on building priorities captured at community meetings in May and November. Based on those findings, the consultants will present options for repairing, renovating or replacing each school, and the costs of each option. Community members can ask questions and give feedback on the options. Visit www.reshape.pps.k12.or.usto preview options. | Cully Park Design Concepts Open House |
Cully Park Design Concepts Ready for Community Review January 22 open house offers public the opportunity to help the design team develop preferred alternatives. Portland Parks & Recreation is holding an open house as the second step in planning a new park in Portland's Cully neighborhood. Community members can drop by between 4:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at the Word of Life Community Church, 4927 NE 55th Avenue. Light refreshments will be served. The design team, led by Vigil-Agrimis Inc., will consider the comments from the open house and then modify the designs into two preferred alternatives. The Columbia Slough Watershed Council is delighted to announce the 2007 Watershed Council Award Winners. Award winners will be recognized at the Ninth Annual Awards Celebration and Silent Auction on Friday, February 1, 2008 at the Acadian Ballroom in NE Portland. | Visionpdx Seeking Members on Vision into Action Committee |
We are currently seeking community members who are interested in serving on the Vision into Action Coalition's Steering Committee. The Steering Committee will be comprised of 15-20 people who reflect Portland's diverse cultures, perspectives and experiences. Committee members will come from a variety of backgrounds, from business and neighborhood advocacy, to education, art, and government. Those interested in serving on the Steering Committee are asked to apply for consideration see online application procedures. Interested community members are asked to submit a letter of no more than two single-sided pages in length with the information and answers to the questions in the online application. The deadline is Friday, February 8, 2008 at 5:00 PM.

| Regional Equity Atlas Solutions Workshops |
Coalition for a Livable Future invites YOU to attend an upcoming Regional Equity Atlas Solutions Workshop. These workshops are designed to help us start developing solutions to the inequities that are highlighted in the Regional Equity Atlas. The Regional Equity Atlas focuses on access to resources by some of our region's most vulnerable populations-poor people and people of color. Intended to inspire community discussion and action, the Atlas can help make equity a concrete component of our metropolitan region's approach to managing growth and development. These 'Solutions Workshops' will focus on identifying and prioritizing potential strategies that will be used to develop a Regional Equity Action Plan. Workshop dates:

2. Portland: January 23rd, 2:00-4:00pm
3. Vancouver: January 29th, 6:30-8:30pm
4. Gresham: February 1st, 2:00-4:00pm

| Brad Avakian & Randy Leonard Lead Community Town Hall 1/15 |
Livable Communities will be the theme for a series of community town halls hosted by Senator Brad Avakian and Commissioner Randy Leonard. The first town hall occurred on January 9th in northwest Portland. The second town hall will be held at the David Douglas High School Library 1001 SE 135th Ave. on January 15th from 7 to 9 PM. The town halls will touch on issues ranging from land use, water resources and renewable energy to public safety and emergency response. Town hall will begin with a short presentation by both Senator Avakian and Commissioner Leonard followed by questions and a discussion with community members. | Author Nathan McCall Joins Local Dialogue on Gentrification |
The Office of Neighborhood Involvementhosts author Nathan McCall as part of Restorative Listening Project. Author Nathan McCall joins local dialogue on gentrification Author, professor, lecturer, and former reporter for The Washington Post Nathan McCall currently teaches journalism at Emory University. McCall will be in Portland on a book tour for his new book, Them, a work of fiction about relationships between neighbors and gentrification. The Restorative Listening Project is a local initiative to foster dialogue and allow Portlanders to hear stories of how gentrification has impacted long-term members of the community. The theme of this year's event is Empowered by the Strength to Love. The Civic Action Group's (CAG) campaign, which focuses on empowerment is working on a campaign that will help them recognize as people dealing with poverty and homelessness that they certainly do have power and consequently that they have a responsibility to organize for more power that is shared with their community. | Park System Development Charge Task Force Meeting Jan 17 |
Park System Development Charges are one-time fees assessed on new development to cover a portion of the costs of providing the additional parks and recreation facilities needed as a result of population growth and new development. A City Council hearing was held on December 12 to examine the Park System Development Charge, with more than 30 community members providing testimony on this important issue. At that hearing, the City Council voted to accept the Park SDC Report, and asked PP&R to provide additional information that will help in determining the appropriate Park SDC rate, such as including park space owned by other city bureaus in the Park SDC level of service calculation. This information will be presented to the Task Force at this meeting, in advance of two community open houses that will occur in February. | Master Recyclers Will Collect Plastic Jan 26th & Feb 9th |
Recycle those hard-to-recycle plastics on January 26 and February 9th. Master Recyclers will collect plastic material that cannot be recycled curbside. Past Master Recyclers plastic roundup events successfully recycled and found reuse options for over 73 tons of plastic. Collections are Saturday, January 26th 9-2 pm at Floyd Light Middle School 10800 SE Washington and at 3325 N Interstate (off Fremont and Overlook park). Also, Saturday, February 9th 9-2 pm in Lake Oswego 5400 Meadows rd. and Westview High School 4200 NW 185th Ave. For more information in what will be accepted visit www.masterrecycler.org.

Jeanne and Dick Roy co-founders of the Center for Earth Leadership, the Northwest Earth Institute, and the Oregon Natural Step Network are leading a class on the theory, practice, and tools of an agent of change working within a chosen circle of influence. Each of us is a member of multiple circles of influence such as a neighborhood, workplace, interest club, extended family, professional or vocational group, etc. Each participant will select one circle of influence, develop a strategy and plan for change, and take steps of early implementation, in consultation with other members in the class towards a sustainable future.
