Mexican Dancer
On December 16 approximately 30 families from Cully and various parts of Portland came together to enjoy a holiday event organized by the Social Activist Youth at Central Northeast Neighbors. This event also helped to connect with families that want to get involved in their communities. The program started with the traditional folkloric dance by Nayely Perez and Girls Scouts. All kids got gifts donated by various organizations and individuals including the Cully Association of Neighbors (CAN).

Social Activist Youth would like to thank contributors: American Friends Service Committee, Diversity Initiative, Cully Association of Neighbors, Central Northeast Neighbors Coalition, Gregory Heights Library, Santa Maria Oaxaca Committee, Girls Scouts Columbia River Council, Kboo “Tonalli” 90.7 FM, Gloria and David Keeth. Hope to see you next year!
What's New
It will be a Happy New Year for the residents of the Arbor Mobile Trailer Park which includes 97 homes in Cully. On December 27th, the Arizona based property owner announced that the Arbor property sale has fallen through along with the proposed 280 unit condo development at this location. There was neighborhood and resident opposition, many Arbor Park families, about a third Latino, participated at the December Cully Association of Neighbors meeting. Furthermore, there was attention of the media, and from City and State officials regarding displacement. We hope that all stakeholders will continue to work on this displacement issue and secure some rights for trailer park residents and low-income renters for the future.

2006 CNN NEIGHBORHOODS: A YEAR IN FOCUS Continued
Neighborhood leaders from Madison South and Roseway as well as others started to work together on a Land-Use campaign. The collaboration is to oppose the proposed 240,000 sq ft big-box development on the land located at NE 82nd and Siskiyou (the site of the old driving range across from Madison High School). This includes a 900 car ground level parking area. Neighborhood leaders also joined forces in actions that promote sustainable development.
Rose City Park and School Picnic
The Rose City Park Community Picnic in September in collaboration with Rose City Park School was a success! With attendance estimated at 700 or more, the event featured a great mix of music, petting zoo, and more family activities. This is a unique event to connect neighbors and their school in the spirit of collaboration and support.

The Sumner Association of Neighbors also hosted their annual family celebration at Helensview High School with seasonal activities for children on Halloween. This was an other community building success for this small neighborhood! Close to 300 diverse neighbors participated including Helensview students.

Beaumont-Wilshire Neighborhood Transportation and Land-Use Committee collaborated with the Beaumont Business Association, Debbie Bischoff from the Planning Bureau of Planning and PDOT for street improvements on NE Fremont. New crosswalks, angled parking and a reduced speed limit makes this bustling commercial corridor more user friendly and safe!
Beaumont-Wilshire Tree Planting
tree planting
In February the Cully, Concordia and Beaumont- Wilshire neighborhoods planted over 160 trees with 100 volunteers, Friends of Trees and the City of Portland. Also, many local businesses contributed culinary delights and monetary donations to make the day a wonderful community-building event.
Central Sandy Business Association's Annual Meeting
NE Sandy
Portland’s newest recognized business district association extends on NE Sandy Blvd. East of NE 57th to NE 82nd in Roseway and Rose City park neighborhoods. The new board was formed at the annual meeting in May at CNN which included local businesses, entrepreneurs, and Neighborhood Association members. One of the main goals is to promote the diversity of the commercial corridor coined the International District by organizers.
Community Leadership Workshops at Madison
In April Central Northeast Neighbors and the American Friends Service Committee partnered to conduct two leadership workshops. The workshops were initiated to connect youth to their community. About 150 students participated in the Leadership classes at Madison High School. The curriculum included various exercises to explore diverse student views about community and participation.

We engaged in a dialogue about the place & role of youth in the community with an emphasis on social responsibility. One student expressed: “The reason why I get involved is to put myself in the shoes of others less fortunate”. Different perspectives were heard that ranged from the need for more participation to overcome issues such as gang violence to starting with being engaged in their school.
