| CNN Announces Grant Projects for 2009 |
|
Cully Schools Connection Project
The CNN Grant Selection Committee awarded five grants after reviewing 22 community
building proposals in the CNN area. Recipients of the 2009 CNN Neighborhood Grants are:
- $4, 975 for the Madison South Neighborhood Association Base to Butte Community Block Party events-Asian American Center
- $5, 000 for Vecinos enAlerta's Latino Cultural Initiative in Cully
- $2, 420 for the Portland International District Needs Assessment in Action: Growth & Sustainability
- $4, 040 for the Loaves and Fishes Fook Lok/Hollywood Senior Center Asian Cultural Events for Elders
- $3, 675 for the Cully Association of Neighbors Welcome Packets for new Cully Residents in four languages

 In 2008, the Public Art Advisory Committee at the Regional Arts and Culture Council approved and supported neighborhood public art projects in Roseway and Beaumont-Wilshire. Congratulations to the neighborhood leaders, artists and community members that collaborated to bring vitality to the CNN area! |

| Storefront Improvements for International Dist. on Sandy Blvd |
The Portland Development Commission (PDC) has extended its Storefront Improvement Program to include commercial properties in the Portland International District along Sandy Boulevard between NE 57th and 82nd Avenues. Small cash grants and technical assistance are available to help business and property owners improve the appearance of their buildings, including repainting and purchasing new windows and awnings. According to the PDC, such revitalization can make commercial zones more inviting, thereby increasing foot traffic and improving neighborhood safety and livability. | Sidewalk Cafe Permit Program Open House |
A sidewalk café permit is required for a food service establishment to place tables and chairs within the sidewalk area for the purpose of seating and serving their customers. The Bureau of Transportation would like to invite you to attend an open house to learn more, talk to City staff, and comment on the proposed changes to the Sidewalk Cafe Permit Program Monday, January 26th 8:00 am - 10:00 am Portland Building 1120 SW Fifth Second Fl., Room C.

VOZ Workers' Rights Education Project
The Vision into Action (VIA) Coalition is pleased to announce its second round of Community Action Grants, including Youth Action Grants. VIA will award grants of up to $20,000 to community and neighborhood projects. Larger awards of $15,000 to $20,000 will be reserved for projects that facilitate active partnerships between two or more groups. Through the Community Action Grants, VIA hopes to encourage a greater level of collective community action in the realization of Portland's shared vision. Projects will reflect the Portlander's core values identified through the visionPDX process. The Youth Action Grants Program will provide grants of up to $2,000 to youth or youth groups who want to take action that makes Our Bill of Rights: Children + Youth and Portland's community vision a reality. City Repair invites community members to propose a project for the 2009 Village Building Convergence (VBC). Projects can be place-oriented, ecological, artistic, structural, social, even alive! The main goal is to promote cooperative, community-based efforts to reconnect with each other and enhance the places we live. | Guide to Help Neighborhoods Deal with Controversy |
How do you handle it when controversy erupts at a neighborhood association meeting? The Office of Neighborhood Involvement has put together a guide of tips and tools called When Controversy Comes to Your Neighborhood. It offers comprehensive information on the following subjects: practical advice for neighborhood association leaders, meeting conveners tips for planning public meetings, and facilitator tips for defusing challenging participants dealing with prejudice. This is a great tool for all neighborhood association leaders to be better equipped to deal with controversy. |

"What can we do to support each other?" These questions were explored and discussed in January. Come turn ideas into action at a Community Building Workshop on Saturday, February 7th, 1-5 pm, 1235 SE Division Street. Meet others who are interested in building positive relationships with neighbors and supporting one another. You will have the opportunity to work through an idea development process and create an action plan to benefit the community as a whole. Everyone has something positive to contribute. Want to become an effective citizen advocate? Join 1000 Friends and others for an in-depth training on Oregon's legislative process and how you can get involved. Gain the skills and techniques to be an effective advocate for policies to reduce global warming and create a climate-friendly transportation strategy for Oregon. Review our other policy priorities and learn how to advance them with your legislator. Meet others who share your interest in civic participation and smart land use planning for Oregon and discuss what we can do together to advance our common goals. | Become a Master Recycler with an 8 Week Course |
Want to make a difference in your community? Learn from the experts. Share with your neighbors. Master Recyclers take an eight-week course on the latest information on waste prevention, non-toxic cleaners, composting, and recycling. Then they promise to volunteer 30 hours to share this information with their neighbors, coworkers and community: Tuesdays in the CNN Community room, 4415 NE 87th starting March 31 and ending May 19 and two half-day Saturday field trips on April 4th and May 9th. | Vision into Action (VIA) Coalition Recruiting Members |
The Vision into Action (VIA) Coalition- a broad, community-led alliance of organizations, businesses, neighborhoods, government and individuals acting collectively and collaboratively to implement Portland's community vision-is recruiting up to 10 new members to join its 2009-2010 Steering Committee. Community members are asked to submit a letter of no more than two single-sided pages in with the information and answers to questions listed in the application. The deadline is Friday, February 13.
