| Farmers' Market Goes Mobile to Serve Cully Neighbors |
In an effort to make healthful, local produce available to everyone, the Hollywood Farmers' Market has a mobile market to serve the Cully neighborhood. The market on wheels is called The Oasis Project because its mission is to serve Portlanders who live in an area that limits their access to fresh fruits and vegetables either because of price or distance. The mobile market will be open from 10 a.m. to noon each Saturday in September at Hacienda CDC's Villa de Sueno. The mobile market is located on TriMet #7 and #72 at NE Cully Blvd. and Killingsworth St. Volunteers from Hacienda CDC will interpret for Spanish and Somali-speaking residents. And the first 75 SNAP (food stamp) customers each week will receive matching funds of up to $5. All welcome to make purchases at the market.
The Oasis Project is hosted by Hacienda CDC and made possible through a generous Pacific Village Grant from New Seasons Market. For more information or to get involved please contact: oasis@hollywoodfarmersmarket.org. |
| Future Parks in the Cully Neighborhood |
Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) acquired of 2.5 acres of industrial property located at NE 52nd and Alberta for a neighborhood park. The $900,000 purchase was funded by a partnership which combined Park System Development Charge's funds and Portland's share of Metro's 2006 natural areas bond measure funds. "The Cully neighborhood has been recognized as one of the most park deficient areas of the city," said Parks Commissioner Nick Fish. The property joins Thomas Cully Park, a 25-acre former landfill at NE 75th and NE Killingsworth, as future parks in the Cully neighborhood. Although there is no money set aside for development of the park at this time, PP&R is exploring grants, sponsorship, capital improvement and other funding options. |
